The new Honda CRF1000L Africa Twin is powered by a 999 cc parallel-twin motor which makes 87 bhp and 92 Nm. In comparison, the Triumph Tiger 800 XCx has an 800 cc in-line triple engine, and makes marginally more power - 94 bhp. But the Africa Twin makes more torque than the Tiger's 78 Nm, and that torque kicks in at much lower revs (6000 rpm).
In late 1989 the XRV750 Africa Twin was launched and quickly became an adventure touring benchmark. It featured a 742cc, 6-valve liquid-cooled V-twin engine (producing 60 hp and 46.2 lb.-ft. torque), long-travel suspension, a large fuel tank, chain final drive, a 21-inch front wheel (widening off-road tire choice) and dual front disc brakes.

Honda claims the Africa Twin has a 49.1% front / 50.9% rear weight distribution but getting the front wheel to pop up over obstacles takes a little extra effort, even with traction control off. Another minor gripe is with the windscreen.
